School Garden News                                     Mrs. J. Hill-Rosato

Our school’s gardens were recently selected from more than 700 kids’ gardening programs nationwide to receive a 2008 Youth Garden Grant from the National Gardening Association based in South Burlington, Vermont.  As a winner of this grant, we have received a $250 gift card from The Home Depot and three NGA publications.  This is the second time we have received this grant.  In 1998 we also received this grant when we were just starting our butterfly kindergarden.
Today, in addition to the butterfly kindergarden, we also have a second garden where we grow vegetables each year.  This past summer we grew corn and pumpkins.  The gardens are primarily taken care of by the kindergarten classes and preschool class. We hope, through the “gardening experience”, to promote conservation, preservation, and appreciation for the monarch butterflies, provide a “real world,” hands-on environment for the children to learn about plant life, and foster the love for gardening.
For more information on our gardens, contact Mrs. Hill-Rosato at hill-rosatoj@knowltonschool.com.
